Virus threatens EXPO 2020 Dubai?

The world is looking forward to the start of the grand international exhibition World Expo-2020 in Dubai, which will last almost 6 months, from October 2020 to April 2021.

To open the exhibition, the UAE government announced the presentation of the tallest skyscraper in the world, which will surpass the 828-meter Burj Khalifa.

The best architects of the world are involved in the construction of luxury pavilions. The Dubai Expo 2020 plan was developed and approved by the American companies HOK and Populous with the participation of the British Arup. The total exhibition area will occupy 438 hectars. The exhibition is located next to the Jebel Ali marina next door to the new, ultra modern Al Maktoum international airport.

According to preliminary estimates, approximately 25 million people will visit the expo.

However, the World Health Organization is preparing to declare a global pandemic of the covid-19 virus and is already developing measures to curb the spread of the virus in the world. First of all, we are talking about restricting passenger traffic and closing borders. So, many major airports in the world have already canceled or limited the acceptance of aircrafts from countries where the distribution of covid-19 is recorded.

The overall picture of the pandemic is becoming brighter with each passing week, and despite limited success within China, the rest of the world - Europe, the USA and other parts of the world are rapidly growing in number of cases. Unfortunately, in the United Arab Emirates at the time of writing, 74 cases have already been recorded. In Iran, the number of cases exceeded 8 thousand. And neighboring Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia there are also from 20 to 189 infected in each country.

In fact, we are in a situation where the spread dynamics of the virus have gone from a regional scale to a global scale. The spread of the infection is well illustrated by the example of Italy, where a dozen cases of primary infection in just 17 days shot up to 12,462 confirmed cases of infection.

If we assume a gloomy scenario for the development of the current situation, then by the summer in the Emirates and neighboring countries, tens of thousands of cases should be statistically confirmed, which together can exceed the total number of infected people now in China. In this case, we take a look at the example of the fight against the virus in China, and we can assume the announcement of total quarantine in several countries of the region at once. Such an event will not only close all neighboring airports, but also will force authorities to isolate all arriving guests for a quarantine period, which can last up to 2 weeks. It is logical to assume that this negative scenario threatens not only the Expo 2020 in Dubai, but also, in principle, the ability to travel freely in the region.

According to experts, simply closing borders and quarantine are not able to really stop the spread of the virus, but can only slow down the growth rate of patients. However, the negative global trend will continue and it is almost impossible to predict when the next mutation of the virus will make it less dangerous - if this happens at all. A radical solution to the problem may be a vaccine to prevent infection in combination with an effective medicine for those who have already become infected.

According to statements by the Sky News agency, Chinese scientists were ready in early February to patent the experimental drug Gilead Sciences, which can fight the virus. However, so far this information has not been confirmed and neither the vaccine nor the medicine officially exists yet. Leading US companies at a meeting with Donald Trump in early March, also announced that their development of antiviral drugs is in full swing. However, taking into account testing, the appearance of the drug is expected no earlier than the end of summer, and vaccines no earlier than autumn. Recall that the beginning of the exhibition is scheduled for October 2020. Unfortunately, while the virus continues to spread rapidly, he necessary drugs should be expected no earlier than autumn, and this is with an optimistic assessment. There is always the risk that something will go wrong and vaccine development will be delayed.

I would like to hope that scientists will be able to stop the spread of the covid-19 virus as soon as possible, and it will not prevent us from seeing the wonders of EXPO 2020 Dubai!
